Dori Baron, Week 2: Calm App Review

I don’t know about you guys, but I am such a night owl. I have had so much trouble falling asleep at night without getting lost in a spiral of thoughts, worries, or utter randomness. I’ve searched tips for falling asleep quicker, watched life hack videos on YouTube that are supposed to help you sleep, and even have the Bedtime feature turned on in the Clock app. Nothing has seemed to consistently work well, though. That was until these past few months when I downloaded an app called Calm. This app basically gives you access to a multitude of relaxing sounds, music, and narrated stories with the goal of helping you sleep, meditate, or relieve any stress and anxiety. I had pretty low expectations, but I thought I would give it a try.

Let me tell you, I am so happy I did give it a try. I promise I am not sponsored or being paid to say this, but this app has really aided me in falling asleep much quicker and relaxing my mind. Once I put on the app and hear the mesmerizing soundwaves, any worries or nagging thoughts immediately vanish. A useful feature of this app is that you can also set a timer for how long you want music to play for. That way, you don’t have to worry about your phone being on for a whole night. There are some great reviews online about this app too if anyone is interested in more information! Here’s one (linked below) I read that is useful as it conveys the pros and cons of the app.

Overall, I recommend this app if you have trouble with falling asleep, are constantly stressed, or just want to hear some relaxing sounds and stories. A downside of this app is that in order to get all the great features, you have to pay a subscription fee of $70 a year (approximately $6 a month). Fortunately, I just happen to have this app for free since it is a complimentary app that my mother’s credit card company gave her. Regardless, even if you are not interested in investing in this app, I have seen really helpful playlists, music, and other types of sounds on YouTube that are effective, as well. Based on my experiences, I'd say that any calming music, in general, is great to fall asleep to. Let me know in the comments if you are also a night owl like me and what you do that helps you fall asleep!

  1. Hi Dori! I can really relate to you. I have such bad anxiety and stress before I go to sleep, during the night, and when I wake up. I do not know what it is, but I get really bad anxiety. I think it is because of school and I overthink everything. I worry to much and get overwhelmed easily. I have heard of this app before, but never thought of downloading it. I never feel like something can actually help me. Now that you said that it really did help you I will try it out.

  2. Hey Dori, this is a great review about the Calm app. I have tried it before and it worked great (and I felt calm!). Recently I have also tried using sleep stories on Youtube to help me fall asleep, but they didn't work because I was worried about shutting off my computer. Maybe I'll give this a try again because it seems like it helped you a lot.

  3. I also do find it hard to sleep, but I think that this app is a complete scam. I saw the ads on TV many times, so I gave the app a try and it hasn't helped me fall asleep at all. I would even argue that the app does the opposite, and actually keeps me awake. So, I would not recommend this app.

  4. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with this app Dori! I have a lot of anxiety especially at night but never try out these types of methods. Ive always gotten ads for this but always ignored it.I don't have any specific method thats helps me sleep, so I might look into this.

  5. I'm so glad that this was effective for you. I also have trouble falling asleep at night, and even wrote my next blog post about it. I will definitely give this app a try, considering the success that you had.
