The legendary Connor Mcgregor, considerably the greatest featherweight in UFC history, faced the menacing undefeated lightweight world champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Early in his career, Connor continued to gain fame as he contuously finished high-level fighters in a ridiculous fashion and extremely quickly. He holds 12 first-round knockouts out of his 17 wins in his career and has taken down serious fighters. He knocked out world champions such as Eddie Alvarez and Jose Aldo, completely embarrassing and outclassing them, and even took down the unbreakable Nate Diaz. To say the least he is a pretty good fighter. But, Khabib is also an incredible fighter and has taken down incredible opponents such as Rafael Dos Anjos and Edson Barboza. He is so tough he used to wrestle bears when he was a child, and he has never lost a fight in his UFC career compared to Conor who has lost multiple times. While Khabib does not have as many knockouts as Conor, he has way more submissions and prefers to fight on the floor. Because of this, it makes this fight such an incredible match up, as one of the world's best wrestlers is pitted against one of the world's best standing strikers.
Fast forward, in their first fight Nurmagomedov took down the Notorious Conor Mcgregor due to a nasty choke submission in the fourth round. It was an incredible fight for both contenders, but Khabib came out on top. Eager to see more fans were sure that these two would cross pads again in the future, but now it is not very likely. They do not seem like they will ever fight again. Their first fight was in 2018, two years ago, and many fans expected a soon after rematch although it never happened. Further, now due to the Coronavirus, training for fights is much more difficult. Although the UFC today continues to have fights, there have not been as many active fighters as before COVID-19 began. Also, one must take into account that Khabib's father who is extremely close to him has recently died and Khabib is taking a break from fighting for a certain amount of time to deal with this tragic loss. And, Conor Mcgregor announced that he has retired, although his UFC contract states that he is still an active UFC fighter, and he has faked retiring many times before to keep media tension on him. Finally, after the fight, all the Irish and Russian fans supporting either Khabib or Conor broke out into war and began to fight causing chaos throughout the arena. It all started after Khabib jumped out of the cage and attacked a member of Mcgregor’s team and some of Khabib’s teammates jumped into the cage and started attacking Conor. Because of this, Dana White, the head of the UFC, is most likely not going to want these two to fight again, even if they were both willing to, for it will inevitably cause violence and chaos amongst the fans who want have a beef with each other. So, with all these factors combined, it is unlikely to say that this matchup of a lifetime will ever occur again. I am a huge Conor McGregor fan and I love watching the UFC, so I am extremely sad that this fight will probably never happen again. Do you think the rematch is possible?

I have never been into UFC, but this makes it sound so interesting! I had no idea there were competitive rivalries like other sports and will for sure look into it. Always lookin for something new to kill time.
ReplyDeleteI've always found UFC to be really enetertaining, I just don't watch it much. But I can't bring myself to like Conor. He's just such a bad person and has no morals. I like Khabib because he just goes out there and "plays his game".
ReplyDeleteI feel the same, Dan. I just can't like McGregor because of the person he is.
DeleteHey Ethan, I really liked the article because its about one of my favorite sports. I understand that you and I have our differences about Khabib and Conor, but with all that aside I could see this fight happening. I believe without a doubt that there gonna have a rematch because the first fight was the highest Pay-Per-View buy rate in UFC history. Conor loves making money and so does Dana White. Also, White loves putting together fights that the fans want to see. I still remember watching this fight live two years ago and it was a crazy experience.
ReplyDeleteSo I am very much not a fan of McGregor, because he is a terrible person in his every day life. That being said, there is no denying that he is talented. Back in the early days of UFC, there was huge fighter who called himself Kimba Slice. His kids all went to the school where I taught. And they all had the EXACT SAME NAME. He wanted all his kids named after him, so every single one of them was named Kevin Ferguson. It was... interesting (I know, it isn't 100% relevant, but it does relate to UFC at least!)
