Isaac Berkower Week 2 What's the deal with tiktok?

For those who don't know, TikTok is a social media app that has millions of daily users from all over the world. The app gained its popularity because it contains short, entertaining videos, and an algorithm that makes sure its users stay on the app for a long period of time.

Over the past few months, there has been growing concern over the fact that nobody knows about the companies involvement with the CCP (Chinese Communist Party). This is concerning because TikTok may be handing over the data of all of its users to the CCP. Although giving the CCP data from the phones of all of its users doesn't sound so bad, it is actually a major issue. Obviously, this infringes upon everyone's right to privacy, but beyond that, this makes Americans predictable, making the country more susceptible to foreign attack, and at least giving the CCP more power than it deserves.

For this reason, TikTok was supposed to be banned in America tomorrow, being deemed a national security threat. This was all true until yesterday, when Oracle, a computer tech corporation put in a bid to buy TikTok.The company deals with cloud storage and security but seems to want to buy TikTok to expand its reach and grow as a company.

So, for the many people who feared that TikTok would be banned in America tomorrow, you could rest easy, knowing that the app will remain in America thanks to it being bought by Oracle. With all that in mind, what would you have done if TikTok were to be banned?

  1. Hi Isaac, due to the fact that the CPP probably does have my face, I would have been thrilled if TikTok was banned. It takes up way too much of my time. I tried to delete it a few weeks ago but I ended up redownloading it.
