Isaac Berkower - Week 4 - The Nobel Peace Prize

The Nobel Peace Prize is an annual award given to people who, according to Nobel, "have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses". Past recipients have been Yitzchak Rabbin for his efforts to create peace in the middle east, Nelson Mandela for his work to end apartheid in South Africa, Liu Xiaobo for his struggle to try and increase human rights in China, and Barrack Obama. In addition to the great honor, winners of the award also receive a large cash sum, this year amounting to 9 million dollars. This year's prize will be awarded on December 10. While the nominees for the prize are hidden from the public until 50 years after the year of nomination, the person nominating another for the prize is free to say who they nominated. This year, there have been 318 nominations including Hong Kong protesters protesting extraditions to jurisdictions, a Saudi women's rights activist, and Greta Thunberg. The decision of who will win the award will be announced on December 10th, but many speculate the winner to be a Hing Kong protester.

The process for selecting the 2020 winner has already begun, and President Donald Trump has received 3 nominations for bringing peace to the middle east, calming down tensions in North Korea, helping achieve normalized relations between Kosova and Serbia, and for his overall foreign policy, or the "Trump doctrine". Another notable nominee for the prize is Joe Biden because he "has argued that the best force is the force of argument," meaning that instead of resorting to violence, Joe Biden has peacefully argued his views.

We will have to wait until October to see who wins the award, but who do you think deserves the award the most this year?

  1. I think that President Trump deserves to be nominated for his work with Israel making peace in the Middle East. I also think that the Hong Kong protesters deserve the award for their work in trying to instill a democracy into their government. We will see who wins in December!
