Romy H week 4 Going vegan?
Over quarantine, my family and I decided to try going vegan. Spoiler alert: this only lasted 3 weeks. My mom was super invested and went full out. She found various recipes and did research on how to get enough protein on a vegan diet. For the following weeks, we traded meat for beyond or impossible meat(plant-based meat), swapped out eggs for a liquid egg substitute, and tried various milk substitutes. In my opinion, almond milk is my favorite alternative; oat milk and cashew milk taste weird to me. I was disappointed when I found out that almond milk is one of the least sustainable milk substitutes. The amount of water that is used to produce almond milk is not great for the environment, and many environmentalists say oat milk or other nut-based milks are better. Overall, being vegan is not easy. Most of your meals need to be prepared beforehand, which isn’t quick nor accessible for many people and their schedules. Luckily, my mom made a lot of food that my siblings and I could heat up for lunch, so it was much easier. We ate lots of rice, beans, roasted vegetables, and salad. I felt like I was full, but the foodie in me was never satisfied. The food we were eating was mainly for nourishment, not for enjoyment. I love food, so the vegan food we were eating just wasn’t cutting it. I mainly missed pizza, cheese, eggs, and ice cream. Dairy-free ice cream was okay but wasn’t the same. All in all, I believe that the perfect diet for me is just to have everything in moderation. Not consuming too much meat still helps the environment, which is something I really care about. I have definitely cut down my red meat and regular milk intake, even though I am not vegan. Making small adjustments to my diet has allowed me to still enjoy my food, but also do my part in helping the environment. Do you think you could go vegan? Would you want to try it for a week or two and see what it’s like?
