Ellie Week 5: Too Sleepy for School

I don’t know how anyone else feels, but I’ve found I’ve been more tired and sleepier than ever these past few months. During the height of quarantine, I’d get it. I wasn’t dancing, barely leaving my house, and sleeping in and staying up late. But as I’ve gotten more into a routine schedule, I’m still completely exhausted. I think the culprit is school online. Now I haven’t been to in-person school at all since we first left, but I do know that as tired as I was in class and after school back then is not nearly as bad as it is now. School even starts later and ends earlier most days for me now, but I still find myself needing at least a 2-hour nap before dance and trying to get to bed as soon as I can after. Something about getting up moderately early and then staring at a computer for 4 hours with minimal breaks just makes me exhausted. And to make matters worse, the school just extended the day by starting 1st period earlier, making school go later with clubs, but also making classes an hour long and making the breaks shorter. You’d think I’d feel more rested because online is technically “easier” and it definitely is compared to waking up early to get dressed and actually drive to school, but I’m still getting up early, doing the same work, and then having at least an hour and a half worth of homework once I get home, so I have to stay up late. On average, I probably get maybe 5-6 hours of sleep a night. Now during the actual school year last year, I NEVER went to bed as late as I do now, and unfortunately, its become quite a habit, where I stay up until 2-3 in the morning every day. I don’t know whether the cause of my sleepiness is just lack of sleep in general, or just my eyes getting tired from staring at a computer screen. What do you think, does online school make you more tired? If you’re in actual school, which one would you say makes you more tired?

  1. Hi Ellie, I relate to a lot of what you said in this post! I've been routinely going to sleep later as well and, in general, feel more tired daily. I've still been doing my dance classes online, but even just getting ready for those can be a bit difficult since it requires a lot of motivation and energy. I agree that online, it’s easy to feel drained after sitting and staring at a computer screen for hours. I think that we felt more awake in actual school because we would be constantly walking around, moving, going outdoors, and socializing (which is harder to do now). I miss being able to do all of that, so I hope it becomes a safer, more normal situation here in Florida soon!

  2. Hey Ellie, I totally agree and can relate to this very much. With the insane amount of work we get for homework from the teachers all together, I am lucky to get in bed at 12. I usually go to bed around 1 in the morning everyday due to workload that we get. Hopefully we can try and get something changed.

  3. Hey Ellie, I've been having the exact same problem with going to sleep very late and usually getting only 6 hours of sleep. Last year, most school nights I would go to sleep at around 10, but ever since covid and online school, that's all changed. From the amount of homework and online school we get, I just feel exhausted every single day. Online school is definitely much more tiring than in person.

  4. Hey Ellie, I completely agree with this. On the few nights that I do get enough sleep, I still wake up feeling exhausted. No matter what I do in the day, I can never manage to really go to bed early. For me, I consider before midnight early. I hope that you can figure out your sleep schedule and feel a little less tired.
