The show "Friends" is one of the highest grossing shows of all time. I think it's safe to say that everyone in this class knows what "Friends" is, so I won't explain it, rather I'm going to look at the discussion of whether it is a good or bad show. Obviously, that's a completely subjective argument, but I will weigh both sides. First, there's no denying that Friends at its peak was quite possibly the most famous show on earth. In the last episode ever of Friends, there were 52 million viewers, the fourth most viewers ever for a show finale. In the last season of the show, it was rumored that the 6 main characters (Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, and Matthew Perry) were getting paid over TEN MILLION DOLLARS an episode!!! That would've amounted to over 210 million dollars made for each actor in ONLY the last season of the show. I have a more biased opinion in favor of Friends because I grew up watching it because of my mom. Every single weekday when my sister and I were little and living in Chile, we watched an episode of Friends with my mom before dinner. My mom might be the biggest Friends fan I know, as she began watching when she was pregnant with me in 2003 and TO THIS DAY she watches Friends every night on NickAtNight.
For arguments against Friends, one that is mainly brought up is that it is simply not funny. Now, obviously, that is subjective, but the people who argue this do have a point. Think about this, would you laugh at every scene that they use a laugh track for in Friends? Some argue that without the laugh track, it's not funny, and I can understand their point because if I think about The Office, I laughed so hard throughout the whole show and that one doesn't have a laugh track.
Like any show, whether it is good or bad is completely subjective and if wanted to look at it logically, you could rank them by viewership. In any case, different people have different tastes. Do you like the show "Friends"? If you said no, why don't you like it?
So your mom's thing with watching Friends every night is how my husband is with Seinfeld. When people get hooked on a show, it is like a comfort to them :-)
ReplyDeleteAs for Friends, I think it's an okay show, and I watched it all when it was on, but I don't feel the need to watch the reruns. It's one of those shows that is familiar because it was around for so long, but objectively it was only mediocre in its humor.
I have heard about this a lot. I started watching Friends because so many people said it was funny. I didn't find it very funny though. I know a lot of people feel that way about The Office, and I loved the office, so I decided to give the show a good chance. I watched a season but I was not drawn to watching more.
ReplyDeleteI personally don't like Friends very mucg. I find it kind of repetative, but I do see why some people love the show. Then again it is a bit hypocritical coming from me, as I am an avid fan of How I met Your Mother. But there's something there I can find, that in friends I just can't. Food for ithough I guess.
