Isaac Berkower - Week 6 - Does your phone really listen to you?

After getting the new ios update a few weeks ago, I noticed that the orange dot on the top of the screen that indicates whether an app is accessing your microphone popped up very often. I didn't think anything of it because it usually popped up on apps that had features that need the microphone. But then, I decided to do a little bit of "investigating" and downloaded Instagram, and Facebook, to see if those two apps were constantly using your microphone. I chose those two apps because it is a common complaint of people that the app places ads based on listening to the conversations people have, so I wanted to see if that was true. After downloading both apps, I saw that the apps didn't secretly use my microphone, but I was able to find videos on YouTube that showed the app using the microphone while people were just scrolling through their feed. These videos obviously could be faked in many ways, but I do think it's possible that Instagram and Facebook originally listened to people's conversations and all of a sudden stopped because of the new feature on the iPhone. I am curious about whether or not people still feel that their phones cater ads to their conversations or if they stopped feeling that way because these apps potentially stopped listening to them.

Do you guys think that your phone is listening to you, or do you feel that it was listening to you and recently stopped? Let me know.

  1. Hi Isaac. I do think that my phone listens to me, I don't think that it would be possible for me to talk about a little known toothpaste brand, and then have an ad for that toothpaste show up on my instagram feed. Although it is creepy, my phone knows who I am, and the advertisements I get are useful to me because instead of me looking through the internet to find things I like, they are just brought to me on a silver platter.

  2. Hi Issac,
I 100% think my phone is listening to me. It is the most terrifying thing. Every time I talk about something an ad for that thing pops up. Every time one of my family members search something up my phone suggests that thing to me. It is so creepy and I absolutely hate it. This happens to me way too often and I would as well like to know if they really do listen.

  3. Hi Isaac, I think our phone does listen to us or sure. Anytime I speak about someone, it ends up popping up on my phone. I always get very paranoid that someone is listening or even watching me. Its creepy and I wish I had a definite answer whether they listen or not.

  4. Hey Isaac, this is a topic that kind of scares me and I don't really like to think about. Our phones or google home, or alexa, and every electronic is listening to us in order to know when to be activated. It has to hear everything to recognize the "hey siri". However, I don't think that it is storing the information that it hears, so it shouldn't be much of a problem.
