Your phone is a problem. It is an addiction. I personally can relate to this as I have a phone, and it is extremely tempting to use it at all times when I have it. Personal connections between friends and family are lost because of our phones. We are constantly on them throughout the day, and miss so much of the world because we are always looking down at these tiny rectangles. I conducted an experiment where I would not use my phone for an entire three days and it was very hard but very meaningful. I turned off my phone, threw it in my desk drawer, and went off to explore the world. During this time without my phone, I did many things I usually wouldn’t have done if I had my phone. I played board games, talked to family members, played with my dog, went swimming, looked at nature, etc. It was incredible, and I felt better as a person because I was not staring at a screen the entire day. My human interactions were more sincere, I gained a greater appreciation for the beauty of nature and G-d’s creations, and I was more active. This experiment went great and I try to use my phone as little as possible now, only when I need it. I encourage anyone who is reading this to try the same and I promise you will be amazed. If not for 3 days, at least try it out for one Shabbat (to those who are not Orthodox) or one day of the week, and I promise your conversations will be richer and more authentic, your self-esteem and happiness will improve, you will become closer to family and friends, and you will gain a better appreciation for nature. Do you want to stop using your phone too much?
Hi Ethan,
ReplyDeleteI am the same. I really do use my phone a lot because that is where all my resources come from. I really do think that taking a break and doing other things is a great idea. I am willing to try it out and see what I did differently.
Hi Ethan. I definetely relate and go on my phone way too much. Personally, I don't think I could ever go more than at least a day without going on my phone. I do it for a few months at camp, but it's not really the same. While I am on my phone a majority of the day, I can go many hours without going on it, so I do still talk to my family and do other things. While I admit I have an addiction, I don't really care enough to do anything about it lol
ReplyDeleteHey Ethan, I am having the exact same phone problem. Ever since online school started, I've noticed a large surge in my screen time. I felt Yom Kippur really showed me what time without tech was really like. Starting this week, I'm not gonna be using my phone on Shabbat, and it's really been a while since the last time I did that. I'm gonna work to minimize my phone time.
