For every world cup, which happens every four years, there are qualifying tournaments for each continent of the world to decide which countries will enter the world cup. Chile obviously is in the South American qualifiers, as it is located in southern South America bordering Argentina, Peru, and Bolivia. For many years throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s, Chile was a South American soccer powerhouse. They managed to win two "Copa America's" in two consecutive years and went all the way to the quarterfinals in the 2014 World Cup, where they eventually lost to Brazil. Though the Chilean's team excellence was undeniable, they have sadly significantly regressed over the past couple of years. In 2016 they failed to qualify for the 2018 world cup, making it the first World Cup since 2006 that they didn't attend. Currently, the South American World Cup qualifiers are going on, and every team participating has played four games so far. In those four games, Chile has won one, tied one, and lost two, both of the losses coming at away games. They have performed very underwhelmingly and are currently in 6th position on the qualifying table, where the first five teams get in. While there is still a long time to go until the 2022 World Cup, Chile must step up their game on the soccer pitch and be able to qualify for the biggest soccer event in the world. As a lifelong Chilean and hard fan of their soccer team, it hurts to see them so much worse and in this position, because all the great Chilean soccer legends that I grew up watching are now getting old and simply cannot perform at the level they used to, so all I can hope is that we keep qualifying and leave our future in trustworthy hands.

ReplyDeleteHey Dan,
As you obviously know I am a huge soccer fan too and totally agree with this blog. Chile’s performance was very impressive and I hope that they can qualify too. I still do not think they have any chance at all in winning the world cup considering they have never even been close, but you never know. Anyways I know you are from Chile, but is there another bigger soccer team that you support either club or national. I support France for nationals and I just enjoy watching club soccer and don’t really have a specific team that I root for. Also what do you prefer- MLS, La Liga, premier league, or champion’s league.
Hey Dan, I really hope that the Chilean soccer team can step up their game. I watched their world cup games in the past, and would love to see them play again on an international stage. It would also be good for the soccer development in Chile, which depends on the results of the Chilean national team.
ReplyDeleteHey Dan, I did not know about these qualifying games before the World Cup, but it is so interesting. My family isn't very into soccer, so I don't really know what's going on. It was really cool to learn about the system from the perspective of a fan.
ReplyDeleteHi! I don't know much about the world cup, but I hope Chile makes it to the 2020 World Cup! :), even though they had a few loses, they're problably really good.
ReplyDeleteHi Dan, My family and I aren't big soccer fans, we are more into basketball, but it is cool to see the way it works and learn more about it. I know that you are a big fan so you know what you are talking about. I hope for you that Chile makes it and continues to advance!
ReplyDeleteHi Dan, I don't watch soccer so I don't really understand all this stuff but I can see soccer means a lot to you. I hope Chile improves and makes it to the World Cup.
ReplyDeleteHi Dan,
ReplyDeleteI don't really know much about soccer but this was pretty interesting! My brothers always liked football and basketball so those are the sports i'm mostly familiar with. It seems like you really enjoy keeping track of the Chilean soccer team so hopefully they do well.
