Ellie Week 12: Trump Banned From Social Medias

This past week, President Trump’s infamous Twitter account has been permanently suspended. Along with other social media platforms, including Facebook and Tiktok, Trump seems to be fond of Twitter the most. Twitter had previously taken down multiple tweets of Trump’s for false or misinformation, but then, fast forward to January 6th, post-Capitol attacks, they locked Trump out of his account for 12 hours and stated that they would not let him log back in until he deleted three of his tweets that included false information or incited violence.

Two days later, after a few tweets inciting violence, Twitter permanently banned and deleted President Trump’s account.  Twitter’s official account came out and said “After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence.” The president attempted to log into his other accounts such as @POTUS, the official account for the presidency, and @TeamTrump, but both were later suspended as well.

Although, Twitter was not the only social media platform to ban the president this past week. After the January 6th attacks, Instagram placed a 24-hour suspension on the president’s account as well after he posted the infamous “we love you, you’re very special” video. The next day, Mark Zuckerberg announced that President Trump would be banned from his social media, Facebook, as well. Other platforms such as Youtube, Reddit, Snapchat, and Tiktok, which he famously tried to have banned but it appears they beat him to it, also announced that he would no longer be able to use or make an account.

What do you think about all of this? Should the president have the right to social media platforms even if the platform itself deems him/her unfit?

  1. Hi Ellie,
I have thought about this for a while, and I think that social media platforms have the right to ban someone. People have been banned from social media before, and I don't see why the president should be any different. I do find it amusing though to look at the list of things that Trump is not allowed on. For example, he is not allowed on shopify, and that makes me laugh.

  2. Hi Ellie!
There has been anger expressed by many people over this because of freedom of speech. A private business, such as these social media platforms, have every right to ban a user if their content is dangerous or is misinformation. I've been seeing people on TikTok saying "it's scary how the President can't tweet, but he can call war." Obviously, that is over exaggerated, but the message is true; its concerning that the leader of our country can't post anything due to fear of him inciting violence or spreading misinformation, but he still has the power to make much bigger decisions.

  3. Hey Ellie,
So aside from me thinking this is absolutely hilarious, I actually thing these companies have every right to do this. These are private owned companies and want a certain environment for there apps. President Donald Trump was given numerous warnings, yet he continued to disobey their requests. Also I dont think freedom of speech really plays into this because what he was saying and was a threat to our country that was encouraging violence.

  4. Hey Ellie, I think this form of expression from media outlets is part of what makes America so great. The blocking of Trump's accounts displayed truly that no matter that an American president has access to, he will never be a dictator. The media is a huge part of society, so yes it should certainly be kept under control by those who run it.

  5. Hey Ellie, I honestly find this whole situation funny. Our country is very concerned with Twitter when there are so many other things to deal with. I agree with what these companies did though because it would look really bad on them if their apps were used to start violence. They are just trying to do what they can to stop it. I don’t even think that it can be seen as a personal attack against Trump. If any person of power was causing violence, the same thing would have happened to them.
