During an awful period in Richmond, Virginia in 1992, at least 11 people were murdered in a 45 day period because of a drug deal going wrong. Found guilty at the sight of the crimes, Corey Johnson was sentenced to the death penalty was connected to committing at least 7 of the 11 found murders. Two other people were also charged with him for committing drug trafficking.
Nearly 30 years later, Johnson was finally supposed to face execution today at a federal prison in Terre Haute Indiana. This order was halted though due to a positive COVID test being found a month ago in Johnson, as well as another inmate that was also supposed to be executed today. After weeks of delays, the court finally got the okay to go through with the execution of the drug dealer. The prison still hasn’t completed the execution up until this point, and might not be able to anymore when president-elect Joe Biden gets inaugurated next week. This is because Biden opposes the death penalty and so he wants to put an end to the procedure.
This is something that I feel is a good thing that will happen. Though the acts of Corey Johnson were horrific, I feel that executing the man behind at least 7 murders really isn’t going to solve anything or make the victim's families feel any better about it. I feel it is necessary to show that we as a society are better, and so we shouldn’t commit acts of murder like the awful criminals that end up in jail. What do you guys think, should Corey Johnson be sentenced to the death penalty, or should the procedure end, allowing prisoners to just remain in a jail cell for the rest of their lives?

I completely agree with you. I feel that the death penalty is unnecessary and immoral. I feel that many individuals believe that the absolute worst punishment someone can receive is the Death Penalty. In my opinion, the worst punishment is a life sentence. Instead of dying and being free in the afterlife, the criminal would be able to sit and rot for decades. As a result, I think that this murderer deserves to just sit and rot. What do you believe, is a life sentence worse than the Death Penalty, or is it the other way around?
ReplyDeleteHunter I agree with on your view about the death penalty. I don't think it is necessary and like you said I truly don't see what it accomplishes, whether that be for the victim or the perpetrator. If he serves his whole life in prison, and probably solitary confinement, that is a way worse punishment, because there is a very real chance that the criminal would rather be dead than rot his life away in jail.
ReplyDeleteHi Hunter, I agree with you opinion on death penalty. I don't think it solves anything or does any good. I think it would be better off to have him stay in the jail cell for the rest of his life. I just don't really think anyone deserves death. By being stuck in jail, they would suffer more and feel the consequences for longer. I just don't think death penalty is as effective and it should be put to an end.
ReplyDeleteHey, I completely agree! Even though biden's not my favorite presidednt I agree that the death penalty is wrong. Yes, he was involved with 7 murders, but killing him won't do anything. Also, not in this case, but there are so many executions that ocuured and they ended up finding out that the person executed was innocent after they got executed. Also this sounds horrible but being locked up is problably a better punishment than 'resting in peace.'
ReplyDeleteHey Hunter, I agree with you that the death penalty is wrong. I think a criminal would rather die than spend the rest of their life sitting behind bars. Even though I think a murderer does deserve to get the death penalty, it's worse if they suffer in jail. On the other hand, there are some criminals who fear death more than a life sentence, so its kind of difficult to say what there overall punishment should be.
