Let down your hair: New Army rules - Diana 14

In the past, Army rules and regulations regarding women have been very strict, however, recently some of those rules have been altered. Over the years women in the Army have complained about these harsh restrictions, but finally, this past Tuesday Army leaders have started to loosen some of these rules.

Some of the new rules allow women to let down their hair, have nail polish on, wear earrings, and dye or highlight their hair. Basically allowing a woman to be a woman! These orders will take effect in February. However, the focus is not only about improving existing rules in the army regarding women. They are also trying to “expand diversity within the military and prejudice” . They are looking to create a diverse and inclusive team and change the military as we know it today.

On Tuesday some of the factors that went into deciding these new grooming changes such as health and safety issues. Army Sergeant Maj. Brian Sanders stated that the high tight hair buns may cause hair loss and scalp issues for women. Additionally, some women with a thicker hair type can cause the helmet to fit poorly and could possibly impair vision. Another point Sgt. Sanders brought up that women should wear earrings in order to allow them to feel like a woman even in a combat uniform.

I think these new rules are long overdue within the army environment. Women should not have to go into the army being stripped of all the things that make them a woman. We have a set stereotype of how the military is, but I appreciate that they are trying to get people to see past this stereotype and get a new rap for the “military”. What do you guys think of these new rules?

  1. Hi Diana, I think that the new rules are a good thing for the military. It shouldn't change any of the women who decide to serve just because they aren't men and/or look different from them. Women shouldn't have to hide who they are if they want to think of enlisting in the army.

  2. Hi, I have a quick question about the policies in this. Are they allowing both women and men now to do all these things? or just women? or could men do these things before and now they are letting women do them?

    1. Hey Eden, so I think i read that men have always had to shave their heads, and still continue to do so. I dont think men were as vocal with there complaints, so nothing has really changed for them.

  3. Hi Diana! I think that these new rules are very cool. It allows women to express their personalities in whatever way they choose. Instead of just wearing a uniform, I really appreciate that they can now dress up.

  4. Hey Diana! I love these rules! It's about time that they change the hair standard because the hairstyle for women in the military is honestly so uncomftorable, and it takes away from women being able to express themselves. So, I love the new rules because women can be women and finally show off their femininity.

  5. Hi Diana, I think these rules are really good. I like that now women who join the army can still stay themselves. I think it will make them feel better because they will be able to each have their own style and be able to be themselves.

  6. Hey Diana, I had no idea this happened and actually loved reading it! On top of promoting health, I like how these new regulations allow individuality. The world is changing as we know it, with a big shift to letting people be themselves. It's great that a group that historically demands conformity such as the military is adjusting to these modern ideas.
