Romi Avidor Week 14 A Year After The Tragic Loss

Romi Avidor Week 14 A Year After The Tragic Loss On January 26, 2020 the tragic loss of Kobe Bryant, his daughter, and seven others took place. As you may know, Kobe played on the Los Angeles Lakers NBA team previous to his retirement. He had set the bar very high for future basketball players, and set many records that have not been topped yet in the NBA. It has been a year since, and no one has forgotten. You may wonder how they have been continuing to commemorate him and here is the answer to that. The players on the LA Lakers continue his legacy and bring his spirit on the court with them every time they play by“...transform[ing] pain into appreciation”. After every huddle of theirs, they break it off by saying, “Mamba on three… One, two, three - Mamba”. If you do not know, everyone knew Kobe and his nickname that was given to him, Mamba. They have been saying this since the day of the crash, before the corona virus even broke out and the, “...NBA season hung together by threads”. Later on in the season after the games had stopped, they started an NBA bubble in Florida. Everything was different in the world, and life was not the same as it was five months earlier, but they never stopped remembering him in their huddles and continuing to bring his energy to the court. Lebron James said, “[t]here are a lot of things that die in this world, but legends never die and he’s exactly that… it’s all about representing that.” Anthony Davis, another player for the LA Lakers also said “[e]ver since the tragedy happened, we had a mindset that this is bigger than, you know, ourselves, [a]nd there were so many signs in the bubble that he was there with us” nearly a year later! The players on all teams continue to pay tribute to him and who he was. They wear shoes that were customized in his memory, they have tattoos, and “[t]hey shout his name after the biggest shots of their careers.” Till this day, they talk about how they want to make him proud, and they sure have succeeded. Anthony Davis says how even a year later he's still in shock of what happened and it is still hard for him to process it, but the LA Lakers team does not fail to come together during every game, and count to three and say Mamba. https://www.latimes.com/sports/lakers/story/2021-01-26/kobe-bryant-death-anniversary-lakers-honor-memory

  1. Hey Romi, I find it very inspiring that instead of remembering Kobe Bryant in a depressing way, they bring his name into light and try to make him proud. I actually remember where I was when I found out he had died last year. I was getting into an Uber coming home from the beach, and the driver was freaked out because obviously my name is Coby and he was like did you hear what happened?!?! It's absolutely insane and extremely unfortunate what happened to Kobe, his daughter, and the other passengers. Do you remember how you found out about the helicopter crash?

  2. Hi Romi, I am still in shock about Kobe Bryant's death. It's so terrible and definitely did not start off 2020 on a good note. Time has definitely flown by; I can’t believe it’s already been one year. I never really kept up with basketball or basketball players in general, but his death definitely taught me an important lesson. It showed me that basketball isn’t just a sport with some competitive games, but also an outlet that can bring people together from all over the world. He was such an inspiring, wonderful person, and undoubtedly, his memory will live on.

  3. Hey Romy!

I still cannot believe it is true that Kobe is dead. He actually died on my birthday so now every year everyone is sad on my birthday, which kinda sucks. I think that Kobe Bryant was more than a basketball player. He was the definition of hard work, the epitome of confidence, and was an influential figure who inspired people to strive to be their best self and compete against the best. I don’t watch basketball, but my dad is a Lakers fan and he was heartbroken when he heard the news, as he watched Kobe growing up. I think it is still a day to be happy though because Kobe had such an incredible career and his true genius was highlighted after his death. Every time someone throws a paper into a trashcan they say “Kobe” or “for Kobe” and I think that is something that should be applauded, as we are remembering a legend.

  4. Hey Romi, the legacy Kobe left is powerful yet not surprising. His leadership and dedication to what he loved was prominent on the basketball court and his family life. I remember watching the NFL Pro Bowl and the news of the tragic accident changed the whole day for all the players. The NBA as an organization and individual players are doing phenomenal tributes. I feel you chose a great topic to honor his legacy, contributing to us never forgetting him.
