Isaac Berkower - Week 15 - My new Shabbos Activity

5 weeks ago, my family got an outdoor pool table. Many of you know all the rules of how to play billiards from 8 ball, game pigeon, or have even played it yourself, so I won't explain how to play here.

Since my family got the table, I have probably played for close to 20 hours of pool, and it shows in my skill level. I have gone from being barely able hit any of my balls into the holes to at my best, knocking in 5 balls in a row (which is pretty impressive).  Every week, I am getting better and better at the game and hope that one day, I will eventually be able to beat my dad, who had a pool table as a child and can beat me in two turns with a good break.

Outside of my family, I have a few friends that are pretty good because there used to be a pool table in YHS that they played on, and I think that I am now able to beat those Yeshiva kids, but I haven't tried yet. My goal is to eventually be able to play a game where if I get a good break, I am able to win in only one turn. That may sound impossible, but I've seen videos of the pros doing it all of the time, so all I need to do is be as good as the pros and get a little lucky in order to reach my goal.

I don't think that I will be good enough to pursue a career as a professional billiards player one day, but if I keep on practicing, you never know what could happen. I might just be picked up in college and be able to play D1 billiards in college (if that's a thing). Who knows what the future has in store for my billiards career.

I used to play Ping Pong with my friends on Shabbos, but I haven't played ever since I got the pool table. I do want to get back into playing Ping Pong, but I was never able to master the sport, and I don't feel like I am getting better every time I play the same way that I see my great progress in billiards.

If you have ever played the sport, do you think that billiards is a fun game? If not, or if you have only played on your phone, would you want to play one day?

  1. Hey Issac,
I also really love playing pool. I used to play with my grandpa once a week, so that is where I learned. I am not very good- well, quite bad actually. It is still a fun game and definitely fun to play virtually on game pigeon. I hope I'll be able to beat my brother one day, but he is really good, so I doubt that'll happen.

  2. Hi Isaac. I've played pool before kinda as a joke but I really suck at it. I play with my friends on gamepigeon all the time, but again, I'm really really bad at it. I think it's also super fun to play, but maybe it'd be more fun if I could actually do it well.

  3. Hey Isaac, I know that Shabbat boredom struggle far too well and can totally relate to the need for something to do. I have not played much pool, but in my house we are ping pong all the way. It took 8 months of playing to beat my dad, you'll get there just keep practicing!

  4. Hey Isaac, I agree with you that pool is really fun to play. While I've never had or owned a pool table in my house, I've played many times at other people's houses and with friends. I think it's great that you're getting good at it, because you never know when those types of skills will come in handy in the future. Maybe someday we should have a pool-off.
