Jacob Abramchaev Week 18 - Tiger Woods "in good spirits"

Tiger Woods is an icon in the golf world, with 15 major championships to his name. His legacy goes beyond his talent, as his prominence as a black male in a predominantly white sport such as golf is inspirational to many. There’s a reason young prodigies can get tagged as the “Next Tiger Woods”. He is a champion and has battled through injuries. After numerous back problems, he returned to win the 2019 masters. His road to a full comeback was well on its way, and his body was nearing a place to play tournaments regularly.

However, after getting into a car accident Tuesday morning in California his life and career recovery process was put at stake. He suffered significant leg injuries and has started the recovery process through complicated and extensive surgeries. On Friday, Woods tweeted that the procedures were a success and “is now recovering and in good spirits.” The chief medical officer reported that his bones broke into more than two pieces, which pierced his skin. In order to stabilize the leg, they inserted a rod into the tibia.

He will not be able to walk for three months, crushing his hopes of playing in the 2021 Masters after taking a year to focus on his body. Pro golfer turned Orthopedic surgeon Bill Mallon estimates that by the end of his recovery, Tiger will not only be able to walk but have a good shot at returning to the PGA tour. His legacy in the golf world will be lasting whether he can play again or not.

Do you think a comeback for Tiger Woods is unnecessary for his health, or is one final run the perfect ending to a dominant career?

  1. Hi Jacob! Wow, it's terrible that Tiger Woods got badly injured recently. He undoubtedly has so much talent, and it's amazing how he has accomplished so much. It'd be a shame if his career were to end from this. I hope that he has a great recovery and can have a successful comeback, but of course, health and well-being always comes first.

  2. Hi Jacob, it is so sad to see Tiger Woods get into an accident like this. He is a golf legend as well as an accomplished athlete, so I would really like to see him come back and get another win at a tournament. That would really be inspirational to many people in this world, although Tiger should focus on his health first. If he is not fit to play golf again, he should not push his physical boundaries.

  3. Hi Jacob. That is so sad that he was in a car accident. Hopefully his recovery will go smooth and he will be back on the golf course soon. I hope he will come back stronger than before, but I think that he has accomplished so much in his career that he should be satisfied if he doesn’t get the chance to come back.

  4. Hey Jacob, this is absolutely devastating to hear about how a role model to many has been severely injured. In my opinion, I believe that Tiger Woods will eventually return back to playing golf, but if he didn't, his legacy would be everlasting. It's going to be an extremely long recovery, but hopefully he'll come out even stronger. Do you think he'll return to playing golf?

  5. Hi Jacob,
It is so sad to hear that he got into an accident that changed his life and can risk his career. I think that if he is healthy enough to come back then he should do everything in his power because that would be amazing and would show his commitment to the sport. I think that even if he does not come back his legacy will live on forever. I know how upsetting it must be that an accident like this risks everything he has ever worked for, but it is important to never give up.

  6. Hey Jacob,

I saw this recently. It is so sad and terrible. Tiger Woods was a complete golf legend and could be the greatest golfer of all time. I hope this does not affect him severely and cause him to never be able to play golf again. If it is his last time playing, he has still had a legendary career and incredible accomplishments. Have you ever seen the clip of him taking a put and walking away not looking at the ball because he knew it was going in? If not, you should definitely look it up. It’s awesome!

  7. Hi Jacob. Tiger Woods doesn't need to prove anything about his skills as a golfer, but a comeback would obviously be really nice. I do think that he has the ability to come back from this, and still be an amazing player, just like how players in other sports come back from surgery still being as good as they were before, but there still obviously is the chance that he won't be able to come back and play like he used to which is very sad.
