On Thursday February 11th, there was a deadly crash involving 133 cars in Fort Worth, Texas. On Interstate 35, at about 6am the tragedy began due to inclimate weather conditions on the road. Ice Storm Shirley made the Texas roads covered in snow and ice. As drivers were heading to their destinations, the ice on the roads caused many to lose control of their vehicle and slam into one another. The line of crashed cars was 1 and a half miles long across the interstate. 6 people have been confirmed dead with another 65 injured. Of those 65 injured only 36 people had to go to the hospital. It all started when a fedex truck lost control and hit a barrier along the highway. The 132 cars behind him all could not stop and banged into each other consecutively. The incident, with cars piled on top of one another, is a nightmare situation. Michael Howard, a victim of the crash, described the deadly situation by saying “all of a sudden there's ice, and everybody's wrecking, you don't see the ice, 'til you feel it… You can't stop, so I steered off into that wall… then the people behind me just bam, bam, bam, bam.” The situation seems absolutely terrifying because it was not preventable in any way. While driving, people were being slammed by the cars behind them and in front of them. The fact that people survived this crash was a miracle. A tragedy like this really puts life and small, insignificant problems in perspective. Did anyone else hear about this accident? If so, what do you think about highways being shut off due to icy conditions in order to prevent a situation such as this?

Hi lauren, yes I had heard about this and read about it on the news and twitter. It's crazy how it only takes one mistake or one person for there to be such a massive tragedy like what happened in Texas. Honestly, I think that when the weather is as dire and icy as it was in Texas the day of the crash, I think state officials should close down the highway to prevent terrible tragedies like this from happening again.
