Romy H Week 17 Does money buy happiness?

This week I was scrolling through a list of thought-provoking questions and came across this one: Does money buy happiness? My short answer is yes to an extent but not completely. Obviously, financial issues cause distress, so having enough money to live comfortably relieves that stress. That doesn’t mean that people without much money cannot be completely happy, because they definitely can be.

There is no easy answer because there are so many people that work at miserable jobs to make money and aren’t happy at all. I think there needs to be a balance between working at a job you like and making a comfortable salary so your day-to-day life is enjoyable. I’m definitely worried that I will end up at a boring 9-5 office job, but hopefully not.

Anyway, if it wasn’t about making money this is what I would do: I would work in a floral shop and have an art studio. I would spend my days making flower arrangements for various occasions and paint. Selling my art would be a fun side hustle, but if it took off I would make that my main job. This is unrealistic because it doesn’t initially provide a salary in which I could travel and blah blah. I wish that’s not how it was, but it is. Maybe one day there will be a time where miserable office jobs are more enjoyable and other jobs that are deemed as “hobbies” are better respected. Of course, there are painters and florists that are famous and successful, but I’m talking more about after college and your first jobs as an adult.

Do you think money really buys happiness? What job would you have if it wasn’t about the salary?

  1. Hey Romy, you are asking a very good question. In my opinion, money doesn't buy happiness because there is always something that you can't buy that is the one thing that will make you the most happy. If I could have a job and the salary didn't matter, it would likely be an actor, so I can meet and learn all of my favorite celebrities.

  2. Hey Romy, I think you're asking a question that doesn't really provide a correct answer. For one, every situation is different for every person who faces this dilemma. Like you said, I think there can definitely be arguments made for both sides of the question, and ultimately it comes down to your personal opinion.

  3. Hi Romy,
I personally think that money can buy happiness depending on what makes you happy. For example, if someone loved to travel and that was what brought you happiness then money can definently provide that happiness because you need it in order to book plane tickets and to stay at hotels. In other cases, money can not buy you happiness. I agree that it can buy you happiness to a certain extent. It's a tough question to answer because to one person it can, but to another it can't. I think about my future and I want to maybe make my own business or own businesses. I am not sure but I am very passionate about it.
