Isaac Berkower - Week 19 - Do You Need a Degree To Succeed?

For some people, going to college is one of the biggest waste of times where they just party all day and night, and don’t take any of their courses seriously. For these people, college is obviously useless, and this blog isn’t about them.

This is about the people who work hard in college and try to get the most out of their experience there. For them, is getting a degree worth it?

One thing to take into account with this is the cost of college. For some of these people, going to college means taking upon themselves student debt that they will be in for the rest of their lives. The other cost is that going to college takes away years of your life.

Those are the costs but there is a lot to gain. Going to college and getting a degree opens up the job market for you and allows you to pursue a specific job that you might want. Although this is a benefit, it still could be achieved without going to college. Getting a degree is just a way to show employers that you are qualified, but if you don’t have a degree, that doesn’t mean you are not qualified for a job. In fact, a person without a degree is even sometimes more qualified. College is just a place where people learn and get certificates that they learned what they learned, but the same things that can be learned in college could be learned through other means like reading and interning.

So, while I do think that getting a degree makes it easier for a person to find success, I don’t think that it is necessary, and I do think that college isn’t necessarily the best place where a person can learn what they need to learn to succeed in life.

Do you think that getting a college degree is necessary or the most beneficial way to learn what you need to succeed?

  2. Hi Isaac,
College is actually just one of my options after high school, and I'm not even sure if I will go. Nowadays, I can get full college courses on youtube, and if I wanted to learn something I could. I feel that college is more just about getting the degree than actually wanting to learn. So yes, college will probably give you the most tools you need to succeed, but I think that you are asking the wrong question. I would ask: Is college going to give you the tools to lead a happy life? and my answer to that would be no.

  3. HI Issac,
Personally, I think collage is really restricting. You are basically taking out four years of your life to learn what you could learn in a million different ways, whether it be reading or interning like you said, or taking courses online. I think not going to college give you more room to be free and live life while maintaining your learning. Its really a preference, people like college and others dont, but society has engraved in our minds to think that everyone has to go to college to be successful which is not necessarily true.

  4. Hi Issac, i'm very two sided with this. On one hand, I think college is important and you can gain a lot from it. You also gain a lot of experiences. But, I also think you don't need to go to college to be successful. If you truly are hardworking, I Think you can be successful on your own and do it your own way. I think people who don't go to college and aren't successful don't truly want it.
