Lauren Hodes- Week 20- Does Prince Harry really care about racism?

After this week’s tumultuous tell-all interview from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the most striking allegation was of racism in the royal family. Meghan Markle claimed that “in the months leading up to Archie's birth, a member of the royal family expressed "concerns'' and there were "conversations about how dark his skin might be when he's born." Referring to the royal couples bi-racial child Archie. I am not here to say whether these allegations are true or false though I am going to question the situation surrounding it. Harry also stated that racism “played a large part" in their decision to give up their place in the royal family and leave Britain. If racism is such a large issue to Harry, enough to force him out of his own country, why was he seen in a nazi uniform and spewing racial epithets on two occasions? Down below are some examples of Harry displaying behavior that could be classified as extremely “racist” in the past.

In 2005, Prince Harry dressed up as a Nazi for halloween. He had on a swastika armband. This is not funny, appropriate, and certainly does not fall into the category of his upstanding “anti-racist” behavior that drew him out of England. Now, you may be saying well he was young and maybe he just messed up once? Harry was 20 years old, 3rd in line for the throne, and extremely educated at the time. There is no excuse for dressing up as a guard aiding the murder of 11 million Jews, blacks, disabled, and lgbtq individuals. At the age of 24, Harry’s racism continued in the military. During training, he called a fellow soldier “our little Paki friend....Ahmed.” This was widely seen as racist and insensitive to many especially that soldier of Asian descent. In addition on that very same day, prince Harry went on to berade a Muslim soldier by saying “F… me, you look like a raghead.” This is just not okay in any way. No other members of the royal family have displayed racism quite like Harry.  Hopefully the royal family makes peace. Let me know what you think of the conflict down below.

  1. Hi Lauren, I think that the Prince Harry racism conflict is not good for both himself and the country of England. It of course shows how he is a racist person, but it also shows how "out of touch" England is in their beliefs towards racism in their country.
