Maya Melamed 20- Student Dies After Frat Event

A 20-year-old, Stone Foltz, dies at a college fraternity after being hazed. Hazing is a tradition in frats where the new people pledge their loyalty by doing something dangerous or embarrassing. Stone Foltz was a student at Bowling Green state University in Ohio and was part of one of the fraternity. After an off-campus fraternity event, he was dropped off at his apartment. His attorney says that he was given a “copious amount of alcohol”, which seems to be part of the hazing tradition. Later that night, his roommate had to call 991, but the student was already in terrible condition and was unresponsive. This all happened Thursday night, and on Sunday evening it was confirmed that he had passed away. The Ohio school’s authorities are still investigating what seems to be a “hazing activity involving alcohol consumption.” Pi Kappa Alpha International, the host of the event, has been suspended. The association says “ The fraternity has a zero-tolerance policy toward illegal activity, substance abuse, bullying, and hazing of any kind.”

Two weeks ago there was also another similar incident having to do with death at a fraternity. Adam Oakes, a 19-year-old, at Virginia Commonwealth University, was found dead at one of the off-campus fraternity houses. His body was found hours after he attended the party.

These deaths have had greek organizations face backlash on college campuses.

I think these kids are so young and the whole situation is crazy. It's hard to know whether it's the fraternities' fault or not, but I think there needs to be more control over these events.

What are your thoughts on this situation? And what do you think they should do to prevent this?

  1. I saw this on the Snapchat StayTuned story and it's so sad. These kids are so young and are like any college freshmen who just want to fit in and make friends. Hopefully these fraternities find other ways to have fun but not haze members to a deathly extent.

  2. Hey Maya, unfortunately I have heard numerous stories similar to this tragic event. I think that it's absolutely so stupid that these students knowingly went beyond their limits, forcing them to pay the ultimate price. Both the fraternity and the victim are at fault. The fraternity should have never went too far with the hazing, and Stone Foltz should have known his limits before joining the brotherhood. Do you agree, if not why?
