On Tuesday, murder suspect Steven Manzo was accidentally released from a Californian jail, forcing the local police to shut down a Los Angeles highway in order to conduct an hours-long manhunt. Due to a paperwork error on early releases, the murderer was released by mistake, and he avoided being re-arrested since the case was closed. According to the Long Beach Police, he was not supposed to be released, but they are doing everything they can to safely bring him back to custody.
Instances such as these have been happening all around the country for years, and have been coming into light recently due to COVID. While the population of positive tested prisoners rises, many jurisdictions are filing paperwork for early releases to minimize the risk of spreading the virus further. Unfortunately, due to over population and chaos, paperwork is mistakenly filed causes hardened felons to roam free while those serving time for misdemeanors are still stuck in prison and are being exposed to COVID. Once they are released, it is very hard to put them back into prison due to the concept of double jeopardy, which means you cannot be sentenced twice for the same crime.
For these certain circumstances, I believe that there should be laws that allows the murderer to go on trial once again and return to custody for the crimes he or she originally committed. I feel that it is unsafe to allow people like Steven Manzo roam free even though the local police are at fault. These murderers deserve the consequences they receive in court, and it is unfair they did not finish their sentence. What do you guys think?
