As many of you know, the NCAA basketball tournament, known as March Madness, began around a week ago, but many issues were drawn up right from the start. The major issue that was being shown all over social media was the difference between the men’s weight room and the women’s. The men had basically an entire hotel ballroom full of weights and other equipment, while the women had a rack of 10 weights and some yoga mats. As you would think, everyone started fighting back and eventually, the NCAA created a new, larger, better weight room for the women's basketball players.
This led to the question of why did the women get treated like this in the first place. This week, NCAA came up with their response to why the women got less than the men. They said that the scale of the men’s tournament is much greater than the women’s, so their budget is larger. The men’s budget is $28 million, while the women’s is $14.5 million. This year, each team spent $2 million on just COVID Tests alone. The problem is, women’s basketball isn’t the only team that doesn’t bring in revenue. Out of 90 teams, only 5 bring in money. So my questionis, why don’t they do more to promote these teams to get more money off of them. What do you think about this situation? Should the women’s teams be treated the same as the men’s even though they don’t bring in as much money in the tournament?
