Romi Avidor. Week 20. Israel is Crazy

In the past two years, Israel has gone through three different elections and were not able to form a government. On March 23, there will be the fourth election of the year. This is absolutely crazy because we, Americans, have a completely different voting system. In this article, they talk about how they are opening the airports in order to let around 25,000 people come home and vote. After the whole country has been under complete lockdown for around one to two months now, they reopened the airport in order to let Israeli citizens have the chance to vote. Moatti, the labor party candidate said, “[t]he right to vote is fundamental in a functioning democracy”. I saw this article with different points of view. First, I agree that it is important for the citizens of Israel and the people who live in Israel to have the right to vote, but on the other hand the country is in a complete lockdown and it shows that each political party wants to get as many votes as they possibly can. It seems as if they do not actually care for people to get a fair chance in voting rather they care about the people voting for a certain political party. It looks bad on them that they are only allowing Israeli citizens just for the extra votes. Once they are in lockdown they shouldn’t go back just because of this. I also think that it is unfair that all Israeli citizens get to vote. By that I mean that if you do not live in Israel, but you are an Israeli citizen, you should not be able to vote on what goes on in the country because you do not experience what life is like on an everyday basis. For example, my parents and my sister would be eligible to vote, but they do not know what life is really like. They do not live in Israel so they can not judge they can only hear different sides. Honestly, I do not know if it is smart or not to let in Israeli citizens because it is only fair, but you are picking and choosing what to be strict with throughout this crazy time. I hope for Israel that this time the party that wins can form a government that is stable. Anyways, what do you guys think about this? Is it fair or not? https://www.jpost.com/breaking-news/israelis-stuck-abroad-not-able-to-vote-outside-israel-cec-660460

  1. I think it is crazy that Israel is having ANOTHER election. Hopefully they will be able to form a government this time. I think the citizens living outside of Israel voting is an interesting issue. If they are able to vote, there should be some digital way to vote. I don't think thousands of Americans should be flying to Israel to vote if they could potentially bring COVID with them and set Israel back and harm current citizens.
