Yair Gritzman, Week 20 - March Madness 2021

March Madness 2021

The NCAA March Madness basketball tournament will begin on March 18, signifying a return to sporting events since the beginning of the pandemic. Last year, March Madness was cancelled due to the pandemic, as were all other sports such as NHL and NFL. This year, the tournament will take place in Indianapolis with heavy COVID restrictions, but the event will still be happening. There will be 68 teams in Indianapolis, and every team will have their own hotel floor with each player getting their own room. This probably brought up the costs of the event, and there are less tickets being sold as well. Also, teams are required to have five healthy players in order to play their game. If they do not have five healthy players, they will be forced to forfeit the match. Therefore, the event is going to be very different from past years. There is always a possibility that a team will be forced to quarantine, so these policies could change the results of the tournament.

Other sports have been making returns since the pandemic as well. The Super Bowl happened about a month ago with COVID restrictions, and the event worked out well. The Australian Open took place in February as well in Australia, even though Australia has strict COVID guidelines in place. The return of sports signifies that we have learned about the virus and can now return back to normal as long as guidelines are set. Sports are back!

Are you going to follow March Madness? What are your predictions for the tournament? How do you the NCAA has handled the current situation during the pandemic?

  1. Hey Yair, yes, I am mostly likely going to keep up with what's going on in the March Madness tournament. I like how there are so many games played within a span of only a few weeks. I am not sure who I want to win, but I do think that the NCAA has handling the pandemic situation pretty well so far. They have been strict in not allowing Duke to participate in the tournament because someone on the team tested positive for the virus; safety is always much more important.

  2. Hi Yair,
I don't think that I will keep up with march madness. It is nice to know that they are being safe though. It would be better if they required all team members to be vaccinated prior to playing, but that would not really be possible

  3. Hey Yair,

I do not know if I am going to have time to keep up with March Madness, but I would like to. I wasn’t sure if they were going to have it this year, so it’s cool that they are starting this month. I am not really sure of how they have handled the Coronavirus protocols as I am not an expert in that field, but I am sure they have it under control. I haven’t been out from soccer since the Pandemic started and no one on my team has got COVID, so I think it will be ok. My favorite team is probably Florida because I am from here and I do not follow basketball that much. Do you follow a specific team?
