Zev Englander Week 19: All American Season 3 Review

*Spoiler alert! If you are not caught up on All American do not read this post

I've been hooked on All American since the first episode. It's a sports drama based on high school characters with insane plot twists, how could I not be? Season one got to the action quick and displayed a contrast between two lifestyles through the transfer of star-wide receiver Spencer James. The life of being rich in Beverly Hills and being affected by poverty, gangs, and adversity in Crenshaw. Through the next two seasons leading up to now, the show has done an astonishing job of developing characters. Between Coop, Spencer, Layla, Grace, Darnell, Asher, Olivia, Billy, and so many more they all have a full story and distinctive characteristics. Now on to season three. We are halfway through, and Spencer is back at Crenshaw High in his senior year to "save them." His shoulder is not fully recovering after getting shot because of some mental issues he has to get over. He goes through an emotional journey to realize it was his best friend's fault. I liked this addition because Spencer had been the immortal hero throughout the show, and experiencing his own struggles taught us more about his character. In the last couple of episodes, the revolving theme has been "What happened over the summer?" The plot is too hard to condense in a blog post, but Spencer has a relationship history with Layla while simultaneously being close friends with Olivia. Olivia struggled with addiction, and in a summer alone Spencer was there for her in her road to recovery leading to them falling for each other. Olivia's boyfriend Asher met a girl in Mexico. Olivia's twin brother, a senior in high school, got MARRIED over the summer without his parents knowing. Cramming that into 1-2 episodes was a lot to handle, and here is my honest opinion at this juncture in season 3. They are overdoing it. Every single episode is too much drama and not enough focus on the foundations of the show. Football and relationships, stick to that. That is what got me hooked, so I hope they find their way back. Are any of you All-American fans enjoying this roller coaster season?

  1. Wow Zev this was pretty crazy to read lol. I've never watched All-American before apart from some episodes in season one but I never planned on watching it, so that's why I was fine with reading this. Honestly, I like to think I'm a pretty visual reader so I was able to clearly picture most of the things you talked about, and even though I haven't watched, I honestly think I agree with you. It sounds like they're trying to do TOO much, like going too over the top just to try and please the viewer, which sometimes can ruin the movie/show, and in this case I guess it is. Hopefully it gets better as you keep watching.
