On Tuesday, March 23, a Syrian man named Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa shot up a Boulder-area grocery store called King Sooners, killing 10 shoppers. The shooter was shot in the leg and was taken in custody alive by law enforcement. The suspect is being charged with ten counts of first-degree murder and is going to face life in prison. The shooter’s sister claimed she had tried to take the gun away from the suspect a couple days before when she saw him “playing” with it. Family members have informed local law enforcement that the shooter struggled with mental illness, including paranoia and outbursts of rage. Many mainstream media sources, public figures, and big social media influencers were sure the shooter was a white male even before the identity was released to the public. Hemal Jhaveri, a USA Today editor, was positive the shooter was “an angry white man”, Don Lemon and CNN described the shooter as a “white man”, and Meena Harris (niece of VP Kamala Harris) posted and then later deleted the following tweet: “Violent white men are the greatest terrorist threat to our country.” What do you think about this response from media and public figures? Do you think there should be changes in gun laws that could have prevented this shooting? How do you feel overall about the shooting? What would you have done if you were in the grocery store?
