The other day I was on Netflix and I stumbled upon a series called "The Queen's Gambit". "The Queen's Gambit is a limited series consisting of only 7, hour-long episodes. I finished the show in under two days, and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. The show tells the story of a young girl who lost her mother in a car accident and became an orphan at the age of 8, around the Cold war era. During her time at the orphanage, she developed a love for chess as well as a drug addiction. As stated in the trailer, "Creativity and psychosis go hand in hand". At this point in time, it was very rare to see women playing chess. However, Beth Harmon was determined to play. Finally, Beth gets adopted, and she is able to enter into chess tournaments and soon enough she becomes a chess protege. She was playing men twice her age and beating them handily. As she got older, she was playing top players around the world and traveling to places like Las Vegas, Mexico, and even Russia later on. However, her addiction was the only thing standing in her way as she grew up. She had fallen into a dark hole and pushed away all her companions, and almost gave up chess. Thankfully she was able to find the strength to try and defeat her addiction, and get back to playing chess. I have no idea how chess works, but without even knowing how to play this was one of the best shows I have seen in a long time. It demonstrates determination, strength, women empowerment, and it has even inspired me to learn how to play. (If you know how to play I would love a lesson, thanks) Anyways, would you watch this show?

Hi Diana, I was just watching this show last night with my dad! I watched for about an hour and liked the show. It's funny to see you write about this the day after I watch an episode. I would love to continue watching this show as I find it very interesting.
ReplyDeleteYou told me to watch the show and this is the one recommendation that you have given me that I actually enjoyed. I am on episode 6, so I still have a few left. The show is super interesting and I also want to learn how to play. I used to know how to play, but I think I forgot. We can learn how to play together ;)
ReplyDeleteMy parents really love this show. They keep trrying to get me to watch it, but I never really saw the appeal of it. The premise seems very interesting, but after the first few episodes I just lost interest. Maybe I should try it again.
