Jacob Poller Week 12: The Riots at the Capitol Building

Hi everyone. As most of you know on January 6th, 2021 there were riots at the Capitol building that turned into something of an invasion. People had to be evacuated as armed protesters stormed the halls of the Capitol building. The very forefront of our nation's governmental system was ravaged by lawlessness and depravity. This is the second time in our nation's history that armed people successfully infiltrated the building, but this is the first time that those people were US citizens.

I'm not here to tell you that what happened then was nonsensical because that’s just going to cause a rift in the comments section. What I am here to say is that we shouldn’t use this as a means to push our agendas, and we shouldn’t be using this as a way to disparish other movements. What happened that morning was the culmination of many many years in the making, and it really does show the split in our nation as a whole. I saw that some people were comparing this to the BLM movement, both left and right in beliefs, yet that is an unfair comparison. The root of that movement is to raise awareness and combat the racial injustices that so many people in this country have faced. But making that comparison takes away from the reality of the fact, and again only seems to grow the divide even more. I’ve seen people make comparisons to this and the storming of the Beer Hall. I made that mistake and I realized that it’s not the correct comparison to make. I say this because there is no comparison to make. Ladies, gentlemen, and all other people reading this, we need to wake up from our own delusions. We need to stop having violence be a means for political gain and start using this as a catalyst for change. Because if nothing changes, then I foresee us descending into a dark place where we won’t come out whole. So please, stop the fighting. Stop the arguing. It doesn’t matter if you’re blue or red, black or white, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, or athiest. It doesn’t matter what name you go by, or what gender you are, or if you have a gender for that matter. What matters is that we are all American citizens. We are the children of liberty. We decide the fate of this country. So I implore you all to stop the fighting. Put down the swords and put down the pens and just be brothers and sisters once more.
