Lately, I have gotten really into reading. Many people think that reading is lame, but when I read, I see what is being described. I didn’t realize that not everyone experiences that, so I understand why people who can’t hear a voice in their head or visualize scenes would find reading boring. Anyway, over winter break I read 3 books and thought I would share my opinions on them. They are all fairly popular books, and I think many of you would enjoy them since they are realistic fiction/romance. Let me start by saying that these books get a bit ~spicy~, but the main messages are important. I guess I only recommend these books for mature readers.
Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover is about a girl who loves music and finds herself in a sticky situation. It seems like she has her whole life together when suddenly everything comes crashing. It is a dual narrative story where the narration switches off between the two main characters’ perspectives. It’s refreshing to read a book knowing the thoughts of both characters. Books often only show one side of the story, so I was even more invested. I don’t want to spoil anything, but the book includes characters who are deaf. This allowed me to realize what life is like as a deaf person and learn about the changes they make to help them. On another note, I’m bothered that the cover has real people on it; I picture the characters in a specific way, so it ruins my imagination. Everyone says “don’t judge a book by its cover,” but I definitely do… oops. Book covers are essential- I like to be drawn to books on a shelf. A cool job, that many people don’t think about, is a cover designer for a publishing company/individual authors. Rating: 7/10.
Normal People by Sally Rooney was actually turned into a TV show, but I have not watched it. This book is about two people who have always had some connection and can’t seem to let go of each other. As time goes on, they keep finding themselves reconnecting in some way. Personally, I found the story cute, but nothing happened. I feel like everyone absolutely loved this book, so maybe I’m just missing something. Rating: 3/10.
It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover. Just wow. This book has a powerful message about domestic abuse, helping others, and pursuing your dreams. Unfortunately, we often see women, and men, being taken advantage of. It brings to light that you cannot judge people for the situation that they are in. Instead, you can try to help them get out of it. The book was incredibly written with a side story, that occurred in the past, that was woven together between chapters to eventually connect to the current plot. I read this book in two days and stayed up until 3 am to finish it. THE LAST LINE- I just stared at my ceiling because it was so breathtaking. Rating: 9/10.
If you read, what books do you recommend? Have you read any of these books? Or do you just dislike reading(which is fine haha)?
Hi Romy, that's amazing that you read 3 books over winter break! I am not familiar with any of the books you read, since I tend to read more nonfiction. I did read a fiction book over the summer called Little Fires Everywhere, which was incredible. I would recommend it since the story is amazing and the writing is just beautiful (if that makes sense). I am currently reading an Elon Musk biography, which is also a very good book if you are interested. He has an amazing story and now he is the richest man in the world!
ReplyDeleteI love to read (obviously - I AM an English teacher!), but I haven't been able to focus on new books much lately. I've been re-reading old favorites instead, though I have a huge stack of new books on my shelf. I'm currently working my way through one of my favorite series. Again. For the fourth or fifth time - though this is the first time I'm reading them all in order. The series is the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett; it is humorous fantasy on an alternate world. The last book you reviewed there sounds interesting, so I'll add it to my list!
