Week 13 - Isaac Berkower - Why GeoGuessr is the Best Game on the Planet

For those who haven’t heard of the game GeoGuessr yet, it is a game where you are given a Google Streets view of a specific place in the world and depending on the mode you are playing, you have to place a pin on a world map of the exact location where you think you are based on looking for clues through moving, panning, and zooming around. Some people play without moving, panning, or zooming and are basically just looking at a picture and trying to guess from that where they are. I find it amazing how this YouTuber named Tom Davies (I suggest you check him out @GeoWiz on YouTube) has been able to get a near perfect score multiple times with just looking at a picture.

I have gotten perfect scores in rounds before, ranging from 60 yards away to even 4 yards away, but I am not as consistent as I would like to be. My goal is to get a perfect score in a full game rather than in just one out of the five rounds in a game, and I actually got very close to that today, getting a score of 22,000 out of 25,000, which is my highest score yet.

In order to get good at the game, you must practice and study a lot. Just to list a few tips here if you would like to play yourself and want some of my insider knowledge:

  1. Always check where the sun is and if it is definitively in the North, then you are in the southern hemisphere and vice versa.

  2. If the line down the middle of the street is yellow, then you are most likely in Either North or South America.

  3. Learn what languages each country speaks and how to identify those languages so that you could know which country you are in just by looking at a road sign.

  4. Learn the different types of agriculture in different countries so that you could tell where you are just by looking at what trees are in the area.

  5. There are certain countries like Venezuela that are never given to you just because they don’t have Google Street View in their country, so be cognizant of that.

  6. Learn what the flags of each country looks like because you will encounter a flag in the street view every now and then.

  7. NO CHEATING. Using the internet to look things up takes all of the fun out of the game, so if you would like to enjoy the game as much as I do, don’t cheat.

If you’ve played this game in the past, how did you like it? If you haven’t ever heard of this game, does it sound like something that you might be interested in playing? Let me know if you have any other additional tips for me for when I play the game that I either forgot to list above, or just don’t know about so that I could get better at the game myself.

**Just a note, the game is free to play once a day and if you would like to play multiple times in one day then you would need to pay the $1.99 per month which would also give you access to the battle royal mode which is arguably the best part of the game.**

  1. Hey Issac, I've seen you, Ethan, and Yair play the game for the past couple weeks and it looks like it is fun to play. I haven't yet played myself, but I will definitely give it a try.

  2. Hey Isaac, this game sounds like a lot of fun! I have never seen or heard about a game similar to this ever. In school, I constantly see you, Ethan, and Yair running around with your computers trying to tell where the image is. You guys seem pretty invested into the game, so it must be good. How long have you been playing Geo Guesser?

  3. I have been playing geoguessr since sixth grade or something but I only go on it like once a year. You should check out the game "The Wiki Game" It has the same energy as geoguessr
