This week, The Mandalorian’s Gina Carano was removed from the show after comparing being a Republican in today’s society to being a Jew during the Holocaust. Lucasfilm stated that she is “no longer a part of The Mandalorian cast.” It also appears that Carano is not planning on returning to the show either. A spokesperson from Lucasfilm stated that she is “not currently employed by Lucasfilm with no plans for her to be in the future.” She also said, “Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.
Carano was heavily criticized after saying in a social media post that “Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?” Carano did go on to delete the post but because of its mass sharing around the internet, the hashtag #FireGinaCarano began to trend on different social media platforms.
This is not Carano’s first offense either. She’s also posted other offensive posts including mocking mask-wearers amongst the Coronavirus pandemic, claimed there was alleged voter fraud during the 2020 presidential election. She also mocked the use of gender pronouns by putting “beep/bop/boop” in her social media bio.
Many Mandalorian fans and non-fans alike took to social media to express their anger with Carano. Many said they were “disappointed, but not surprised” by her behavior, considering her other offensive comments. The hashtag #CancelDisneyPlus trended on Twitter with people stating they shouldn’t have fired Carano because they don’t think what she did was wrong or that people should’ve tried harder to educate her. Many people disagreed with this hashtag and affirmed that they were happy to keep their subscription and they “stan” the right streaming platform. What do you think about Carano’s statement? Should Lucasfilm have fired her or not?
