Olivia Ball - Week 16 - Another Lockdown in Australia...

As everyone probably knows, there is a new strain of the coronavirus that is thought to have originated in the United Kingdom. Australia, a country who completely shut down in order to eliminate the risk of the virus, is now scared of the 13 new cases that they have and the potential for them to be the UK variant.

At the same time, the Australian Open tennis tournament is going on, so players from around the world have traveled to play there, and they did a 14 day quarantine once they arrived. However, after a few days of  the tournament, these new COVID cases appeared, so now Victoria is on a complete lockdown, again. The matches will still continue, but there are no longer any spectators allowed. All players are in a “bubble” like many sports have done throughout this past year. However, many of them fear that they won't be able to leave if they lose in the early rounds.

If you were wondering what I mean by a complete lockdown… this is what it consists of: You can leave your home only for the purposes of shopping for necessities, care and caregiving, exercise, and work that is deemed essential by the government. With that being said, you are not allowed to go further than 3.1 miles from their house unless there is no store that is that close.

The original prediction was that up to 400,000 fans would attend the AO in total, which is still around half of last year’s attendance. If you had the choice, would you want to go on a complete lockdown like Australia if it means that you get to return back to a basically normal life after?

  1. Hey Liv
I've been hearing about Australia and New Zealand's lock down policy, and it seems to be working for them. They shut down when there are just a few cases, and this allows them to keep it under control and go back to normal life sooner-they don't even wear masks all the time. I wish we would go on a complete lock down if it means life could go back to normal- at least a bit.

  2. Hi Liv! So, a lockdown would definetly be hard, but I think it's not a terrible idea. The only things to worry about are the economy and having enough supplies like food and water. Other than that I think a lockdown is a great idea so by the end of it the pandemic will basically be gone.

  3. I don't think that going on a complete lockdown is the best idea, seeing how a lot of the countries that do this don't have nearly the population size as our country, and for most cases, eventually end up in lockdown again if even just a few cases of the virus enter their country. I also think that it would be very hard for small businesses and workers to survive another lockdown with the current state of the economy already being in a bad place.

  4. Hi Liv, I would probably go on a complete lockdown if it meant normal life after. I think even though its very hard, its totally worth it. It would feel like more of a struggle, but I think the virus would go away quicker. Without the lockdown, more people would get sick and it would take longer to get rid of it completely.
