Ellie Week 17: Driving on a Real Road!

Anyone who knows me knows I don’t drive. I got my permit late into freshman year, like 6 months after my birthday, because I was lazy and haven’t done much driving since then...until Sunday. I’ve driven in the parking lot by my temple a bunch of times and then moved on the roads nearby it, but a big step I took was driving in neighborhoods. That was the biggest lesson for me because you have to really start being aware of your speed and your surroundings and it gets you comfortable driving on an actual road. I had never driven on a real road where you had to go past 20mph, but this past weekend I finally drove on one! It honestly wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be and I got used to going above 20 pretty easily. We had to get my mom Valentine’s Day cards at Publix, and I drove all the way there and home too. It was so fun and almost freeing finally not being scared to go that fast. I did get honked at a bunch of times though, I think for going too slow I guess, which really freaked me out, but my road rage is already bad so I honked back really aggressively. I still need more practice before I can start driving to school and dance because of all the lane changes and my mom has panic attacks when she sees me in the driver’s seat, but it’s still cool to say I did it. I know it’s already a while past when I should’ve gotten my license, but now I’m one step closer to hopefully getting it before I graduate. Do you remember your first time driving on a real road? What was it like?

  1. Hi Ellie, that's so exciting that you are starting to drive more often now. When I first started driving I was really scared and was also extra cautious. I started in parking lots and then started driving around my neighborhood to start. As I got more comfortable I started driving to school and back home. The driving test was such as joke because it did not test whether or not I was a safe driver, but I think I'm pretty safe.

  2. Hey Ellie,

That’s super cool that you started driving. Congratulations! It is for sure scary the first couple times around. Even when it gets comfortable and becomes second nature, you have to remeber that it is still dangerous and you can get in an accident at any moment. I am a very safe and comfortable driver and I hope for you to become even better than me! Good luck.
