Ethan- Week 18- GeoWizard: The Wizard of Geography, is Back!

This past week the GeoWizard strikes again! But first, “who is the GeoWizard?”  and “what am I talking about?” you may ask. Great questions! First, there is a very popular and highly competitive game many of you probably haven’t heard about (except for Isaac and Yair) known as Geoguesser. It is a game where you are given a Google Maps street view on your computer of any place in the entire world, and the goal is to place your marker on the map as close as possible to the target. To get the highest score possible, you can zoom as far in as you want on the map and guess the exact street or store you are next to for instance. There is one man, the king of all kings when it comes to this game, who is absolutely unreal. His real name is Thomas, but he is more famously known as “The GeoWizard”. He will take on near-impossible challenges where he is not allowed to move around, not allowed to zoom into anything, or will only have 10 seconds to guess, and yet he is still able to produce near-perfect scores. It’s incredible his knowledge of Geography and the world. One example of his incredible skills was when he was shown a picture of just a street and some generic trees, and somehow he was able to get a perfect 5000 score (that’s when you get only a couple miles away from the target). He is able to use different street signs, the position of the sun, and different landmarks to figure out what country he is in and where exactly he is in that specific country.

This past week, GeoWizard proved himself once again and showcased his incredible skills. He was able to reach first place on the global leaderboard for the specialized UK mode after getting a perfect round of 25,000 points (means perfect score 5 turns in a row!). A couple weeks ago he was also able to reach second or third on the global leaderboard for the entire world map, the hardest version, and he was not allowed to zoom or move. I believe he will continue to set records week after week and provide his viewers with more great content. He is undoubtedly one of the best in the world, but what’s crazy is there might be better players. There are many people who are higher than him on different game mode leaderboards, but regardless he is still incredible, the most fun to watch, and one of the best in the world. I have linked the youtube channel and the game below if you want to start watching or playing. It is not only fun, but you learn a lot about the world, what different places look like, and get a better sense of the global map. Does anyone know of some better than the GeoWizard? Which of his most recent games did you like most?

  1. Hey Ethan. I actually haven't heard of the GeoWizard before reading this so I wouldn't know someone better than him. This does sounds pretty interesting though, I may now check it out.

  2. Hi Ethan. I have found someone on YouTube who is maybe better than GeoWizard. In a 1 hour colab video, GeoWizard lost everytime and this person won almost everytime. His name is GeoPeter and he only has around 4,000 subs, but he is really good. He does commentate as well as GeoWizard, but he might be better.I also suggest that you use Geotips.net to learn all of the tricks in order to improve your game a little bit. As a side note, the "A Diverse World" map is a lot harder than the "World" map I have just found out, so it gives a lot more practice.

  3. Hi Ethan. I actually have never heard about the GeoWizard but he seems very interesting and cool from what you've written about him. He sounds a little like Dude Perfect but not really in the same way. I'll have to look more into this guy because he seems really cool.

  4. Hi Ethan. Like Hunter and Ellie, I've never heard of the GeoWizard until reading your post, but I think it's really cool that he’s so talented at what sounds like a difficult game. I've been hearing about Geoguesser but never have gotten around to playing it. It sounds interesting and educational in a way, as you pointed out, so I definitely want to give it a try myself sometime!

  5. Hi Ethan, I just checked out GeoWizard's Youtube channel and was immediately hooked by his first video. He was taking a journey across Norway in a straight line, and it seemed pretty amazing. This man is doing incredible feats, even if it is in a geography game on the Internet. I would not be surprised if he is a big inspiration to people.
