Jacob Poller Week 17: Relationships are Weird

Love is weird. Relationships are weird. The thought of spending your entire life with someone seems so alien, especially to our generation. Over the past year I found myself in a relationship with someone whom I love very much. But seeing as that relationship has come and gone, I feel like it’d be a good time to share some experience that might help.

For about nine months, she and I were dating but without the label. (We both acknowledged this fact long before we started actually dating) In hindsight, this was not a smart thing to do on both of our behalf. The fact that neither of us wanted the label of “dating” showed that neither of us were ready for commitment. It would’ve been so much more beneficial had we worked ourselves until we were ready, and had we been ready at the same time then maybe try it out. But hindsight only does so much for us now. Another thing that can be a saving grace for a relationship is communication. It goes a long way to say if you don’t like/ are not comfortable with something. In the end we each knew that the others feelings weren’t second to our own. This last piece of advice more so has to do in the wake of a breakup. With that being said, it's okay to need space. If you two are still planning on being friends, then clearly both of you are going to need room to breathe. And some people say that there should be one week for every month you were together. For some it's more while for others it’s less. What it all boils down to is what you need.
