Maya Melamed 16- Update on Kobe Bryant crash

A few days ago, new news from the Kobe Bryant helicopter crash was released. This crash killed,
Kobe along with 7 other passengers, including his daughter Gianna. U.S safety officials have said that the pilot is at fault, as he went against his training and violated flight rules. He should not have flown into the thick clouds as he did. He went against the standard and only should have flown if he was able to see where he was going. It does seem like there were mechanical issues, it was the pilot's fault. The helicopter that they flew in, did not have any systems that signal when the aircraft is in danger of crashing. But they still think that even if they had it, it would not help their situation. They say that instead of banking to the left to get out of the bad weather, he should have ascended straight up. Kobe Bryant’s wife, Vanessa Bryant, says that Island express helicopters inc.., the company of the aircraft, did not train or supervise the pilot properly. She says he shouldn't have flown at all but instead was careless and flew through the fog. The Pilots brother says that Kobe knew the risks of flying a helicopter. The company says that it was “An act of God” which they couldn't control or prevent. They are not taking any responsibility. Vanessa Bryant sued the pilot, Zobayan, and the companies that owned the helicopter for the death of her husband and daughter.

Do you think the pilot is responsible for the crash?

  1. Hi Maya, I think it's difficult in these types of situations to figure out who is to blame, but I feel that in this case, some blame should be placed on the pilot. Though there was some bad weather in the sky, you should know what to do as an experienced pilot in these types of situations. There must be a way for pilots to fly when there happens to be fog in the air.

  2. Hi Maya, I'm not really sure who gets the blame in this case, but I also feel like the pilot does deserves some blame. If the conditions were not good to fly, he should not have flown the plane in the first place. That would have saved Kobe and his daughter's lives. That is the reason why planes don't land or take off in bad weather, and the pilot should have followed protocols.

  3. Hey Maya! Honestly, this situation can be interpreted in many different perspectives on who to blame. I think that the pilot definitely could be the one to blame, but also the people that trained the pilot, as well as the creators of the helicopter. The pilot should have known how to follow protocols, but being in a life or death situation can definitely have put pressure on the pilot so he's definitely not the only one to blame.
