Zev Englander Week 15: The Importance of Basic Culinary Skills

There was a time in my life recently when I aspired to be a chef. Even though I put those dreams behind me, I still cook every day and enjoy it. I can do some decently complicated stuff and through experience and practice, I'd like to think I'm a decent cook. My Grandpa was a caterer and his brother worked in the restaurant industry. Both have been teaching me since I was 8 years old. I don't eat in restauraunts because of dietary restrictions,  and as a result  for years I have cooked pretty much everything for myself, family, and guests and pursued oppurtunites in some small culinary jobs. I enjoy cooking for my friends, but in one of those particular instances I realized something that concerned me. Said friend is 17 years old and does not know how to boil water. It got me thinking, how many kids my age are not capable of preparing a meal for themselves? No judgement, just curiosity. To me, being able to cook is a necessary life skill that everyone should do their best to develop. I think kids especially take food availiblity for granted so learning to work with what you have is helpful. Learning how to cook meals you like will be so helpful in college and beyond. So I have a challenge for all of you. Cook one dinner this week for your family. Could be anything you like, difficult or simple the goal is to learn. We all love food, so may as well take full advantage of what we are lucky to have. If you take this challenge let me know in the comments what you made and how it went!

  1. Hi Zev, I am jealous of your natural ability to cook. I can make basic things like pasta, eggs, pancakes, etc. and a few dishes that are family staples. Whenever I try to make something new though, I have to try multiple times. Even if I follow the instructions EXTREMELY carefully I somehow manage to make mistakes.

  2. Hey Zev! So I totally agree! It is so crazy how some teens can't even boil water. Not gonna lie, I'm not the best cook, but I do know how to make pasta, eggs, steak, ect. It's always good to know the basics, because of how much we rely on food (to live lol).

  3. Hey Zev,

I admire your cooking abilities very much as I am terrible at cooking. What are your top three favorite foods or meals to cook? Also, in your experience, what is the best way for an amateur novice to learn how to cook at at least a decent level? I would love to help my family out but I do not know how to cook anything besides eggs, French toast, and pancakes. Thanks in advance and I enjoyed reading your blog!
