Ellie Week 20: Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Interview with Oprah

Following the exposing interview Oprah had with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, the royal palace is responding to their racism and awful behavior towards Markle allegations. Queen Elizabeth II responded by saying she is “saddened to learn the extent of the challenges faced by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.”

During the two-hour interview, the Prince and Markle discussed their experiences living in the palace. In particular, the treatment Markle faced. People are saying her experience was similar to Lady Diana in the 1980s prior to her passing. The way Markle was treated and disliked can also be seen in the media. In many news outlets, Markle was treated like a scandal and ground-breaking feminist to the general public for doing many things her sister-in-law Kate Middleton did as well. It should be stated that if you are unaware, Kate Middleton is white, English, and came from a very wealthy family before entering the royal family. Meghan Markle is mixed-race with her mother being black and her father being white, American, and although became wealthy after launching her acting career, grew up coming from not a wealthy family.

One of the most shocking secrets revealed from this interview was Markle expressing how she was treated, especially while she was pregnant. As I mentioned, the way the media portrayed her would obviously have a toll on her mental health. She said the failure of the family to stick up for her after racist harassment by British media and members of the public and the overall feeling of being trapped in the system of the royal family made her suicidal. Yet another disturbing secret was about her son Archie. Before he was born, the royal family declined the offer to make him a prince so he would get the benefits and protection of that title. She said concerns were expressed about how dark he would be when he was born. (It’s basic biology that because he’d be only 1/4th black and Meghan’s complexion isn’t that dark as well, he wouldn’t be very “dark” anyway) She and Prince Harry refused to say who expressed this concern, but Harry said it was neither his grandfather Prince Phillip nor the queen.

What do you think about this whole situation? Do you think the royal family had a right to treat Meghan Markle or this way or do you even believe her stories at all?

  1. Hey Ellie. I saw this was trending on twitter for a long time, as everyone in the world was talking about it seems like. With some basic knowledge about the royal family and that whole situation, I think it's very messed up how the royal family and everyone there has treated Megan and Harry. I think one of the worst things about the whole situation is just thinking about how those people with so much power and money and influence can be so hateful and judgemental, honestly it's a bit scary.
