Romy H Week 19 Moxie Movie Review #GRLPWR

This week, a new movie called Moxie came out on Netflix. I kept getting ads on TikTok about it, so I decided to watch it today; I was extremely impressed, to say the least. The movie is about feminist teenage girls that start a revolution within their high school to combat sexism, misogyny, and various problems students were facing. Everything started with one girl with a vision that felt like her voice wouldn’t be heard, but there were many students willing to back her up. The messages in this movie are extremely important because nobody should feel discouraged to stand up for something they believe in.

I was also surprised by how realistic the examples were. In one scene, a girl was dress-coded and sent home for wearing a tank top while the boy next to her wearing a tank top was not even spoken to. The difference in dress codes are drastically different for genders in many schools, and this movie shows how ridiculous it is. Another topic that was brought up was a high school girl who was embarrassed to report that she was raped by another student. This movie also cast a transgender girl as one of the main characters, and another one of the conflicts mentioned was how teachers and students were not willing to use her new name. High schoolers often feel like their voice isn’t heard, but it shouldn’t have to be that way.

I was also impressed by the name of the movie. The word moxie means to be full of courage and determination. That is the perfect name for the movie because the characters were not just a group of ordinary students, they were feminists and advocates filled with enough courage and determination to make a change within their school and society as a whole.

It's amazing to see such inclusive and important themes brought up in films for teenagers. Addressing serious things like rape in a movie aimed towards pre-teens and teens is a major step in my opinion. It is important for older kids to understand these issues and understand how it affects people. Overall, I was extremely impressed by the movie and everything that was included in order to relay an important message to our generation.

Have you seen the movie Moxie? Do you want to watch it? What do you think about the themes in the movie?
