Romy H Week 22 Georgia Lawmaker Arrested at State Capitol

Georgia State representative Park Cannon was arrested at the state capitol after knocking on Governor Brian Kemp’s door to try to discuss the bill they were signing that would specifically negatively impact black people during elections. The law is supported largely by republicans because it makes more requirements for voters. There are also more limitations on mail-in and absentee voting and changes in the runoff time period where not all votes could be counted.

Park Cannon, a black, female, elected Georgia representative, felt that this Bill would disenfranchise black voters. She tried knocking on the Governor's door where the Bill was being signed but was arrested. I attached the video of her arrest because it seemed extremely unnecessary.

She was arrested for and charged for the “willful obstruction of law enforcement officers by use of threats or violence and preventing or disrupting general assembly sessions.” This angered many people because the Georgia constitution says that “lawmakers are free from arrest during sessions of the General assembly except for treason, felony, or breach of the peace.” The video of Rep Cannon has gone viral and upset many people across the nation. Hopefully, this situation is resolved and Georgia lawmakers can find a compromise for a bill that does not suppress any voters or target specific groups.
