Zev Englander Week 20: Texas fully reopened this week....but why?
As of March 12th, 2021 the United States has 29.4 million COVID-19 cases. By now, all occupants of this country have been directly affected by the pandemic whether it be their income or lifestyle. Those effects can be looked at as the good ones, considering everyone that got sick is at risk and unhealthy. Almost 70 percent of Americans are estimated to know somebody that contracted COVID-19. In my opinion that seems like a low estimate, but even that count shows the insane lengths this virus has gone to. It's been a year of living in an adjusted world, so when does it end? For Texas, this week! My research and interest on this started when I got a notification fom MLB.Com. "Texas Rangers will open their stadium to full capacity for opening day" Huh? Did I read that right? I had just gone to a Panthers game where you need to buy yout own section in a stadium at 1/5 maximum capacity. A baseball game every night packed with people starting on opening day two weeks from now. All stadiums' capacity laws are enforced by their counties, so the govrmnent decides who they can host. Turns out, this week in Texas has been somewhat of a grand-reopening from hell. Or at least a trail for a future prison sentence. All restauraunts and busineses are now unrestricted and as of two days ago all mask mandates in Texas have been removed. (apart from Austin) I am deeply concerned by this decision, and am worried about other states followung the trend. Just because vaccine distribution has ramped up does not mean America is in the clear. Only 10.3 percent of vaccine eligible Americans have been vaccinated. Cases have not shown drastic decreases. The time is not now to open fully. The pandemic will start to get worse again. I feel that to get back toward normal life we have to patient and trust what medical professionals are recomending. Do you think Texas opening fully is dangerous? Can you envision more full swing lockdowns and deaths as a result?

Hi Zev,
ReplyDeleteI know it is absolutely crazy that they have completely reopened to normalcy again. In one way it is definitely nice to know that they are done and do not have to worry about masks anymore and stuff, but on the other hand it is probably not the right thing to do. I think that they needed to wait a little longer until many many more people in America got the vaccine. I think it is too soon for them to open up fully like this. I also can't imagine how things are in Texas because I think to myself a lot when I do things now "how did I ever do that" because all I can think about now is germs. I hope that the distribution of vaccines is quick because I really want this to be over already.
Hi Zev,
ReplyDeleteThis is insane. Everyone has gotten so used to this new life, that it would just feel weird to go completely back to normal life. I don't think they made the right decision, considering only 10.3% of americans are vaccinated. I think they should have waiting longer until more people were vaccinated and just for the whole situation to calm down a little more. I think with everything lifted in Texas, the people are definitely going to feel strange and maybe not even comfortable going out.
